How to use this guide
Start with the state where the order will be delivered. Then check the product form, metal, purity, value test, purchase threshold, and effective date. A state exemption and a retailer’s duty to collect are related but separate questions, so verify transaction-specific treatment with the taxing authority and your accountant.
Important bullion-tax terms
- Bullion
- Precious metal commonly valued primarily for metal content. State definitions can add form, purity, marking, or market-value tests.
- Legal tender and monetized bullion
- Coins or currency recognized as money. A legal-tender label does not produce the same result in every state.
- Numismatic product
- A coin or similar item whose collectible value may exceed its metal or face value. Some states tax or exempt it differently from bullion.
- Processed product or accessory
- Jewelry, fabricated items, holders, display cases, colorized products, and other accessories often fall outside a bullion exemption.
How Ploutos maintains the information
Each state summary is built from linked statutes, regulations, revenue-department guidance, official notices, or government FAQs. Current and enacted future rules are stored separately, and review dates are updated only when the underlying sources are checked again.
